Established in 1650, Anne Arundel County was one of Maryland’s original counties. It was named for Lady Anne Arundell, wife of Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore and first proprietor of Maryland. From its colonial beginnings, the county’s lands, rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, and the port of Annapolis have played a role in many important events in American history. Evidence of this long and rich past can be found in church, county, military, family, and genealogical records, preserving the stories of residents from the earliest settlers to the present day.
