At the urging of the Anne Arundel Cultural Resources Division, Tina Simmons applied for a County Arts Council grant to create a booklet and website of Anne Arundel County cemetery iconography. She received a a grant from the Trader Foundation For Maryland Burial Sites, a group that funds cemetery projects in Maryland. Under the auspices of the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society, Tina developed the booklet linked to this webpage.
The goal of the project is to show examples of the variety of artwork that can be found in Anne Arundel County cemeteries. Photographs show the information that can be found on tombstones, and illustrate how materials and styles of tombstones have changed over time. Examples include handmade tombstones, sculptures and carvings, unique personalization, portraits, group affiliations, tombstone makers’ signatures, and unique designs.
A free printed booklet is available at the Kuethe Library and various sites throughout the county.
An online version is available here on the AAGS website, on the Trader Foundation site, and on the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites.
