The stones are laid out in a cross pattern with 16 rows of approximately 8 stones in each row.
Several of these seminarians died in a boating accident in the creek in the 1800’s or early 1900’s.
Second Noviate came to this site circa 1980.
“Terracinium” Esopus, NY is where the seminarians were ordained.
An urn containing the remains of a martyr, St. Justin, was reinterred here July 24, 1989 after the remains were found in a church safe. He was beheaded at age 26 in the second century AD and buried in the catacombs of St. Callixtus. He was then transferred to Annapolis in 1873.
St. Mary’s is one of the few churches in the United States with relics or saints or martyrs.
