Freed African-American cemetery owned by the St. Jacobs Lodge.
Previously owned by St. Jacob’s Lodge #28, The Benevolent Sons and Daughters of Abraham, the current lodge was built in 1907 but the cornerstone states it was established in 1890 and stands on land once owned by Virginia “Jerry” Moore. The cemetery is located on two acres purchased in 1913 by lodge trustees from William Elliott. The lodge played an important role in the community of “Bacontown” or Bacon Chapel”, named for some family slaves of the Dorsey family.
Burials have been primarily through the Snowden Funeral Home in Rockville since the early 1950’s.
