The cemetery was begun three months after the end of the Civil War in July 1865 by William Clarence Dodson, Sr. who was born a slave in the Mount Tabor community, ran away from his owners in 1861, changed his last name from Dodson, and joined the Union Army as a private in Co. H, 29th U. S. C.T..  The cemetery is still in use in 2005.  An additional grave was found when a chain link fence around the cemetery was installed.
