Gibson, (John), Cemetery (Anne Arundel) Duke of Gloucester Street Gibson Island, MD 21056 USA
Exact location of this cemetery is not known.
Earliest and latest death dates are unknown.
Some Gibson Island Quad maps show a cemetery. In 2009 a single vault surrounded by handmade bricks was found. It was believed that coffin nails circa 1800 were also found at the site and thought possibly to be the grave of John Gibson (d. December 1818) and for whom the island is named. It could also be the grave of William Worthington, who owned the island and died in 1770 according to a Baltimore Sun newspaper article dated August 9, 2009. Nellie Nelker’s files at the Kuethe Library in Glen Burnie show an aerial photo with two “X” marks and the word “graves. The Gibson Island Historical Society and an archaeologist found a 10-foot long grave with a coffin about 4 feet below ground. Items found at the site have been dated to 1770-1820.
