One of Mayo’s oldest residents was Capt. William H. Dawson. The family is believed to have come from the Claiborne area of Talbot County of the Eastern Shore originally.
A larger cemetery area was fenced in after Dr. Choate’s purchase of the property but later removed.
There supposedly formerly were above ground graves which were broken up in a bulldozing attempt to clean up the area at an unknown time.
2002 and 1999 deeds mentions the cemetery and a 1946 survey of the property.
A 1910 land record (Liber GW folio 131-134) lists a private burying ground with a right of way for the use of the family of William H. Dawson and includes the location of the cemetery in relation to the plot.
Jos. I. Dawson is shown on the 1878 Hawkins map and two Capt. W. Dawsons on the 1875 Martinet map.
Information about the cemetery and inscriptions are found in The History of Mayo, Maryland by Caroline L. Britt Mullins, Gateway Press, Inc., 1996.
Information listed in Find-A-Grave.
