The cemetery is located on an active military base. Identification at the gate required.
The cemetery has been active since 1868.
Over 5,000 burials in nine sections and columbarium.
Many of the tombstones are memorials to those buried elsewhere.
In the past the cemetery was the last home for blacksmiths to fleet admirals but was used primarily for faculty, officers, and enlisted personnel who died while assigned to the Academy. Later, eligibility requirements became more stringent. Currently, interments are reserved for Academy graduates who attain flag rank while on active duty.
